BTW, The "E36" compact was a Frankenstein car. A mixture of E30 and E36 parts. The one that's the most visible is the E30 dashboard, but the rear axle, and other assorted parts were also sourced from the old car to make a cheap entry level car that could pull young customers away from the Golf GTI and especially the Golf VR6.

The first Z3 was the same way, mechanically, if not relating to the dashboard, but it was likewise much shorter in the aft section as well, like the 318 hatch.
